I was prediabetic at 28—here’s how I reversed it

For breakfast, I swapped simple carbs like poha and upma for complex ones like ragi idlis, barnyard millet and dal chillas, always paired with a protein source like boiled eggs. “Simple carbs digest quickly and spike sugar levels, while complex ones release energy more gradually,” says Shilpi.

Over time, I started planning every meal with protein at the centre. Vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats filled the rest of the plate—but protein was non-negotiable.

A balanced workout routine

Exercise improves insulin sensitivity because it helps your muscles absorb glucose more efficiently. While I exercised five times a week, my workouts included 70% strength training. Agarwal recommends a well-rounded mix of activities to support optimal metabolic health. “The ideal ratio is 60% aerobic exercises like brisk walking, cycling or swimming; 30% strength training such as weightlifting or resistance-band workouts; and 10% flexibility or stress-reducing practices like yoga and Pilates.” This combination boosts insulin sensitivity, but also reduces inflammation, supports muscle mass and helps manage stress, another major factor in blood sugar regulation.

Stress management

Of all the changes I made after being diagnosed prediabetic, managing stress was the hardest. Stress doesn’t respond to discipline the way diet or exercise do. You can’t green-juice your way out of a full inbox or a spiralling mind.

“Chronically elevated cortisol levels lead to persistently high blood sugar levels,” writes Shilpi in her book. She suggests reframing problems as challenges, not threats. It puts you in the driver’s seat, steering through the mess, instead of just bracing for impact in the back.

What helped were small rituals that didn’t feel like chores. Techniques that stimulate the release of feel-good hormones—like spas, meditation, yoga and breathwork—helped me stay out of fight-or-flight mode. One I turn to often is box breathing: a simple technique of inhaling, holding, exhaling, and holding again, each for a count of four.

Creating a healthy sleep routine

Sleep deprivation does more than make you tired; it disrupts the delicate hormonal balance that regulates appetite, weight and insulin sensitivity. “Sleep plays a critical role in the body’s ability to repair and restore itself,” writes Shilpi. “When your body doesn’t get the rest it needs, these disruptions can cause a chain reaction that affects your overall metabolic health.”

Lack of sleep can increase sugar cravings, lead to weight gain, and more importantly, it can weaken your body’s ability to process glucose efficiently. That’s why building a consistent sleep routine—one that prioritises quality and duration—is just as important as eating well or exercising when it comes to reversing prediabetes.

What is a microcurrent facial?

A buzzword in beauty right now, and rightly so, is the microcurrent facial and the technology is everywhere. Like many treatments, it aims to deliver plumper, firmer skin and more lifted contours, but unlike many, it’s painless, its effects are immediate, and there’s virtually zero downtime.

Often billed as the “non-invasive facelift”, a microcurrent facial can be had as a professional treatment or incorporated into your existing at-home skincare routine using a plethora of at-home microcurrent devices. To help you understand more about this game-changing technology, we spoke to the experts.

What is a microcurrent facial?

A microcurrent facial is a treatment that uses low-grade electrical currents to boost blood flow, stimulate skin tissue and muscles in your face with the aim of toning, tightening and lifting. Although it might sound intense, it’s a non-invasive treatment with no pain or downtime associated. Add to that its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin for plumper, firmer skin, its efficacy in improving skin tone and texture and lifting the contours of the face and you can see why it’s such a popular treatment for many.

What does a microcurrent facial involve?

Before your practitioner starts using a microcurrent device, your skin will be coated in a layer of conductive gel or a water-based serum. The formula needs to be water-based and oil-free, as the electric current can pass easily through water but is blocked by oils. Without a gel, the microcurrent cannot easily penetrate the skin and may cause irritation or discomfort. “The electrical current flows between two conductors, typically slender rods in salon devices or rounded spheres in at-home tools,” explains skin expert Keren Bartov, who offers microcurrent as part of her bespoke treatments at her West London clinic.

“When both conductors make contact with the skin, the current passes through to the underlying facial muscles, helping to both stimulate and retrain them. Rather than acting directly on the skin, the microcurrent works to target the muscles beneath. This re-education of the muscles involves working with 32 facial muscles to improve tone and lift. However, the microcurrent alone isn’t strong enough to move the muscles. That’s why the treatment uses probes to physically guide the muscles into new positions. This manual movement, combined with the electrical stimulation, helps reinforce proper muscle positioning and enhances product absorption.”

Does microcurrent hurt?

Although there is no downtime, some people may experience minimal side effects such as slight redness or tingling but this should subside quickly. “Sometimes you might feel a little muscle twitch, but it’s painless,” adds Bartov.

Why is microcurrent beneficial for skin?

“Microcurrent facials use gentle electrical pulses to stimulate facial muscles, resulting in a lifted, more sculpted appearance, kind of like a workout for your face,” says Bartov. “The effects are both instant and build over time. As well as lifting, microcurrent also boosts circulation, enhances product absorption, and stimulates collagen and elastin, supporting overall skin health and muscle function.”

How often can you have a microcurrent facial?

For best results, microcurrent should be done regularly. As it works to “train” the muscles as to where they should be (i.e. more lifted) repetition is important. “Consistency is key to achieving visible results,” adds Bartov. “For in-clinic treatments, frequency can vary depending on factors like age, skin condition and individual goals. We’ll tailor a treatment plan to suit your needs, but the treatment must be done once a week for four to six times, depending on skin condition. If you’re using an at-home device, aim for three to four sessions per week for best results.”

When will you start to see results?

“You’ll notice an immediate lift and more defined, tighter features right after your first session,” says Bartov. “With consistent treatments over the following months, as collagen production increases and muscle tone improve, you’ll begin to see longer-lasting, more transformative results.”

What’s the difference between professional microcurrent treatments and at-home devices?

The crucial difference between the devices used in professional microcurrent treatments is the intensity of the electrical current that’s used. While at-home devices are excellent for gentler, more regular use and for maintaining your professional treatments, if you want immediate lifting and toning, it’s best to book in.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t receive microcurrent treatment?

Anyone with metal implants or who has a history of epilepsy or seizures should avoid microcurrent facials. It’s also not a good idea if you have heart issues, as the increased blood flow may cause problems. Anyone in their first trimester of pregnancy should also avoid it, as should anyone with active acne pustules. If you have Botox or filler, it’s best to hold off on any microcurrent treatment until they’ve had time to settle, usually a couple of weeks. Doing it any sooner may cause product migration and affect the results.

What products should I use after a microcurrent facial?

After your microcurrent facial has worked hard to stimulate collagen and elastin, try and incorporate a product that can carry on the good work. At long last, after a seemingly endless merry-go-round of creative director changes at the helms of fashion’s leading houses, we’re finally getting our first treatises on the industry’s new lay of the land. Following on from Jonathan Anderson’s Dior debut during men’s week was another hotly anticipated – though arguably more mysterious – first showing at Celine, where American designer Michael Rider – formerly of Polo Ralph Lauren – presented his vision for the house. Granted, following in the footsteps of Hedi Slimane – who held the top job at the label for seven years – and Phoebe Philo, whose 2010s tenure remains one of the most revered and referenced in contemporary fashion history – was always going to be a tall task, but it’s one that the ’til-now-IYKYK designer fulfilled with aplomb.

It was, in many senses, a confident synthesis of the hallmarks of his antecedents’ signature aesthetics – Philo’s razor-sharp, whittle-waisted tailoring, yen for elevated jolie laide graphics and chintz, and the emblematic Phantom bag all made appearance; Slimane’s slim-line sensuality and mod-ish flair coloured the menswear offering in particular. More than that, though, it paid homage to an archive that has long been relatively subdued – Celine’s storied equestrian heritage, for example, translated to proudly logo-ed sweatshirts and jodhpur leggings; its patrician bohemianism to the silk carrés and jangling gold charms styled throughout – while also narrating Rider’s own story as a designer. There was a distinct, old-school Ghesquière flair to much of the styling – particularly the contrast-toned tailored silhouettes with oversized, blade-sharp jackets and ballooning pleated pants, while the all-American prep to be expected of a man who literally just came from Ralph Lauren was a notable undercurrent. Never, though, did any single component overpower – this was a collection that was both eclectic and clear-sighted in its invocation of both Celine and Rider’s pasts, hinting towards a promising path ahead for their joint future. Whenever Jonathan Anderson’s name has appeared in the fashion news cycle of late, it’s been with respect to his beast of a new job at the helm of Dior. Since the first chapter of what, in many ways, is a three-part debut (we still have womenswear and couture to come!) has now bowed, attentions naturally pivoted to a question that the Irish designer’s fans have been asking since the big announcement first came: what will happen with his namesake label, JW Anderson? Well, at a presentation in Paris at the start of Couture Week, the label’s new guise was unveiled. Rather than continue as a four-collections-a-year fashion line (in the classic sense of the term), the brand will pivot to operate as a lifestyle concept, centred on “things I like and [that] I would like to have around me. And everything has a story,” a line from a press release reads. The whole affair remains overseen by Anderson – and there are plenty of clothes on offer in the first drop, unveiled yesterday in a muted campaign shot by Heikki Kaski: Japanese denim jeans, Scottish argyle knits and sweatshirts bearing slogans lifted from the punchy, textual works of queer, Berlin-based artist Dean Sameshima.

These latter pieces give a sense of the broadened, curatorial scope of JW Anderson – beyond fashion, the brand will serve as a platform for the sale of objects, curios and artworks convened by Anderson. In a sense, it feels like a way for fans of the polymathic designer to step into (and shop from) an ever-shifting moodboard – a holistic expression of what’s making him tick – from gardening tools to loafer-inspired satchels; Mary Stephenson paintings to reissued Charles Rennie Mackintosh chairs. In many senses, it feels like an analogue approach to what he achieved at Loewe – less because of the remit of the project, more because of the intentional interdisciplinarity at the heart of it. Everyone, from that micro influencer on Instagram to your kitschy uncle, now owns a Labubu or, at the very least, a Lafufu. If your corner store is like mine, it’s selling Labubu-themed rakhis and your grandmother is likely watching the doll’s supposedly evil origin story on YouTube Shorts. But as is the case with any fandom, once the normies make their way in, the OGs go deeper to swear fealtly. How, you ask?

Rigidity: When exercise follows a fixed schedule regardless of illness, injury or other needs. “Rigidity goes against the idea of health,” she says. “There’s a difference between consistency and obsession.”

Compensation: Using workouts to punish yourself for eating. If a slice of cake leads to four hours on the treadmill, it may be time to question your motivation.

Targeted body change: When workouts are used only to change specific areas like the abdomen or thighs. Tabares reminds us that the goal should always be health, not control.

Compulsivity: When exercise feels like an obligation or an addiction rather than a choice.

Obsession with metrics: Over-tracking steps, calories or time spent training can lead to fixation. “Let go of the numbers,” she says. “What matters is moving in a way that fits into your life. Something as simple as walking to work counts.”

A healthy approach to physical activity, she says, is one that supports both mental and physical wellbeing. It should come from respect and self-acceptance, not guilt. “The problem is that unhealthy exercise routines often make us feel bad when we’re not doing enough,” she adds.

Exercise should not feel like punishment

To help address vigorexia and obsessive patterns, experts at Sanitas recommend the following:

Set achievable goals: Focus on balance, not transformation. Avoid routines that fixate on muscle gain or altering appearance. Choose full-body movement that supports overall wellbeing.

Practise self-acceptance: Learn to appreciate your body for what it can do, not just how it looks. This mindset can be supported by practices such as yoga or meditation.

Rethink what fitness means: Health includes mental, emotional and social wellbeing. When these are neglected, the pressure to meet appearance-based standards intensifies.

Prioritise joy and consistency: Choose activities that feel sustainable. Movement should be something you look forward to. Whether it’s swimming, dancing or a group class, doing what you enjoy is key.

If obsessive or restrictive behaviours persist, Buenavida recommends seeking professional support. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help address the thought patterns that fuel distorted body image and excessive control.

Tabares adds that the most important question is why we exercise. That answer often reveals the most. “Exercise should never feel like punishment,” she says. “If you recognise these patterns in yourself, try working with a certified professional. Even if exercise feels like part of the problem right now, it can also be part of the solution. Movement is essential. It helps us live better.”

How did OTT shows we once loved become OTT shows we can barely finish?

Is TV bad now or are we just buried under an avalanche of content no one actually wants to watch? Between bloated franchises, algorithm-led OTT shows and prestige fatigue, the small screen feels smaller than ever.

My recent bout of rage/frustration/resigned acceptance was prompted by the agonising one-two punch of Squid Game’s final season and the fourth instalment of The Bear. Unlike some, I actually really enjoyed the former’s sometimes slow-burning second season, but its third? It clumsily kills off the most interesting players early on, but without much emotional impact or pay-off; features head-scratching, soap opera-esque twists which pay no heed to previous character development; feels weirdly slow and dull for a show about mass murder; uses a CGI baby that hurt my eyes; and then ends with Cate Blanchett kicking off Squid Game’s American spin-off. (Can someone please explain to me why the double Oscar winner was playing ddakji in Los Angeles?)

The games themselves and the eerie, childish set design remain impeccable, but the same sadly can’t be said for the show as a whole. How, I wondered, has this cultural phenomenon been reduced to this?

Then, I made the error of moving straight on to the new season of The Bear. Its quality was less of a shock, simply because season three was such a downer—a dragged out, pretentiously artsy endurance test with only one redeeming episode (the Tina-centric, Ayo Edebiri-directed ‘Napkins’, which is really brilliant).

Season four is perhaps more watchable overall, but has no perfect episodes (though the Syd-focused ‘Worms’ comes closest)—it has a handful of interesting moments, but is, mainly, a collection of very prolonged and not-particularly-engaging plot points playing out until we reach a (very predictable) conclusion. Will this restaurant survive? By the end, I honestly didn’t really care.

How did the show which gave us the family nightmare of ‘Fishes’, the happy tears of ‘Forks’, the dreamy Copenhagen travelogue of ‘Honeydew’, and the 20-minute panic attack of ‘Review’ in season one, end up in a place where it had me rolling my eyes and scrolling blankly through my phone as I watched it?

And it’s not just these two shows. The first half of this year has featured much more than its fair share of high-profile disappointments.
