Visiting other people’s homes, he felt a sting of sadness when he saw family pictures covering the walls. Finally, in 2017, the now 46-year-old (“just 46,” he emphasises) sought to remedy this lack of documentation by working on a photo performance series with his mother.

Currently exhibited at Gallery Sumukha in Bengaluru and curated by Joshua Muyiwa, No Longer A Memory combines the nostalgia of old-school studio-shot photo albums with the theatrics of folk plays performed in rural India. In one picture, Shiva and his mother don colourful suits and carry boxy TVs on their heads, harking back to when a young Shiva swore he’d steal the TV from the rich family in their village for her. In another photo, they pose as a cop duo on the hunt for fugitives. It’s 10pm and I open Instagram right before bed (terrible idea, I know, but we move). Within the space of a few minutes, here’s what I see: an AI influencer eating lava from a bowl, World War III “outfit inspo” (mostly camo), missiles flying through the sky as someone plays saxophone in Lebanon, news about syringe attacks at a festival, ‘10 signs that you might be dating a narcissist’, homes blown to rubble in Palestine, Katy Perry smacking a Labubu doll out of someone’s hand, girls strutting to Charli xcx’s “Girl, so confusing” and *checks notes* an AI gorilla doing cocaine in a forest. And then, I close my eyes and settle down to sleep.

We all knew that the end times would come a-knocking eventually. Global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which laid out all the ways in which climate disaster was imminent, is now almost 20 years old. The rise of artificial intelligence—which is wreaking havoc on both the environment and our critical thinking skills—shows no signs of slowing down. World War III has arguably never looked so possible. And yet, despite all of this, despite the warning signs existing for as long as they have, none of us could have predicted that the apocalyptic vibes of the 2020s would manifest in such a way that we’d be watching soldiers dance to Ellie Goulding on Instagram before seeing a Corgi skateboarding in China.

It’s not just Instagram that feels particularly dystopian right now—and by “dystopian”, I mean the live-streaming of major global catastrophes juxtaposed against “what I eat in a day” videos. Such extremes have always occurred in the world, and it’s not as though violence and quotidian ordinariness haven’t existed side by side until now. But the sheer relentlessness of the extremes we’re witnessing via our phones feels not only unprecedented, but also completely normalised. Within the space of a few seconds, I might come across an incredibly upsetting image of a starving child in a war-torn country alongside some Tumblr-style pics of Kate Moss and Pete Doherty in the 2000s, swiftly followed by someone dancing to Michael Jackson amidst a Category 5 hurricane.

It’s quite hard to measure what all of this is doing to our brains because, well, what exactly are we measuring? Our desensitisation to brutality? Our collective anxiety levels? One thing that scientists and psychologists can agree on is that social media has the propensity to contribute to poor mental health more generally—particularly among young people. One recent study found that adolescents who were “addicted” to social media were at roughly double the risk of suicidal behaviour. As is the case with all good things on the internet, bookshelf wealth seems to have been twisted into a game of aesthetics rather than authenticity. Instead of a warm reading nook that beckons to them at the end of a long day, people are more focused on creating Pinterest-worthy personal libraries that scream ‘look at my curated lifestyle’ rather than ‘let’s talk about our favourite authors’. I’m talking mahogany wood, crown mouldings, brushed-brass accents and books that look too spotless to touch. But let me tell you this: if I enter a house and see a floor-to-ceiling shelf with colour-coordinated spines, I am running for my life. If the books are arranged alphabetically—according to author or title—I may not leave immediately, but my face will contort with pain of its own accord. I share the rage that grips a bibliophile when a book they lent isn’t returned to them in the same condition, but there’s a fine line between a book that is loved carefully and a book whose first page is yet to be turned.

The reason I enjoy browsing bookshelves in people’s homes is to spot similarities in tastes or file away conversation starters to fill awkward silences. Narula organises her bookshelf alphabetically—I’ll reserve judgment—and adds meaningful elements to it, such as framed quotes from her favourite childhood books gifted to her by her sister. “That way, it’s not just about trying to ram as many books in there, it’s also about the story behind my shelf.” Ramesh’s cubicle, on the other hand, is arranged according to what’s inside the books. Over the years, she has been cautious to collect books that are not simply on bestseller lists, but also give voice to “different perspectives”. Still, Narula and Ramesh agree that a variety of genres and writers from different backgrounds is the most important indicator that your bookshelf is in the pink of health.
