Is it okay to not have just one best friend?

Who’s your best friend?

It’s a deceptively complicated question you’ve probably been asked over the course of your school years, often to measure social worth. Everywhere you look, society continues to reinforce the idea that we should have one: that perfectly mutual, ride-or-die bond like Christina and Meredith’s in Grey’s Anatomy, Blair and Serena’s in Gossip Girl, or even Maya and Anna’s in PEN15. But what about those of us who, well, don’t have a capital-B Best Friend?

“This idea of having one singular BFF can feel like proof that you’re loved and secure,” Christina Ferrari, PsyD, a clinical psychologist based in Miami, tells SELF. You’ve found someone who prioritizes you above everyone else—and better yet, has crowned you the very “best” of their entire circle. That explains why, for anyone who doesn’t have that sort of inseparable relationship, “it’s easy to assume there must be something wrong with you,” Dr. Ferrari says. But in reality, not having a best friend isn’t a sign of failure at all—and having one is an idealized yet unrealistic standard we’ve been taught to aspire to.

How the “best friend” myth keeps us feeling guilty—and insecure

Barbie Atkinson, LPC, founder of Catalyst Counseling in Houston, agrees that the “BFF trope,” as widespread as it is, rarely shows up in real life.

“It’s a wonderful fantasy,” Atkinson tells SELF. “But it clashes profoundly with the reality of adulting.” To realistically maintain a Grace-and-Frankie-level bond, you’d need limitless time, Atkinson points out, constant proximity that makes 24/7 interactions effortless, a near-perfect alignment of life stages and priorities, along with zero external pressures from things like partners, kids, or demanding jobs. “So while the essence of a ride-or-die’s unwavering loyalty, deep understanding, and consistent support can exist in adult friendships, the manifestation of this constant availability and all-encompassing presence is unrealistic for the vast majority,” Atkinson says.

Even if it were attainable, experts warn that a hyper-attached, almost codependent dynamic isn’t something to strive for. As Dr. Ferrari explains, “It’s the same reason we don’t put all our investments in one stock: Putting all of your emotional needs into one person just isn’t healthy or sustainable.” Which is why, instead, it’s best to have a mix of companions who each fulfill a different role to support you. That, according to Atkinson, might include:

6 ways to style ’90s straight jeans and flats

Despite the popularity of baggy and balloon silhouettes, 90s straight-leg jeans continue to be a favourite. The proof? This season’s collections and the best-dressed street style looks. With them, you don’t need much to stand out — their charm lies in their near-perfect fit. Not as tight as skinnies and not as loose as baggies, their cut strikes the perfect balance between relaxed and refined. Back in the day, they were the uniform of the most iconic supermodels and actresses of the decade and to this day, they remain a fashion insider’s secret for looking effortlessly put-together.

The Spring-Summer 2025 jeans trend report has crowned them one of the season’s key styles. If you’re still unsure, a quick glance at the runways of Coach, The Row, Bally and Diesel confirms it. It would be a mistake not to consider them for your daytime looks. Best of all, they adapt to every kind of style — you decide how minimalist or modern you want to go. This is where footwear makes all the difference. While they pair well with almost anything, this season’s runways suggest styling them with flat shoes — the idea is to look polished yet effortless, and you don’t need sky-high heels to achieve it.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from 90s icons like Julia Roberts and Kate Moss, it’s that straight-leg jeans are the easiest solution to the morning “what to wear” dilemma. Whether you’re heading to the airport or strolling through Los Angeles, they work for any kind of occasion — and with any kind of footwear. They’re the key to looking sharp with your favourite sneakers or with a pair of normcore booties, two very different styles that show just how versatile this cut can be.

This season, however, the new styling proposals point to low-profile shoes that are dominating both on and off the runways. Think Mary Jane shoes, ballet flats and moccasins — ready to complete a polished look that feels effortless and unplanned. Need inspiration? These ideas might be exactly what you’ve been searching for. Here’s how to wear ’90s straight jeans with flats in 2025.

Ananya Panday shimmered in pearls while Priyanka Chopra Jonas leaned into plaid in the best looks of the week

Wrapped and ruched in pista green, Mira Kapoor’s Acler mini was styled by Tanya Ghavri. The asymmetrical neckline—one side slouched low off the shoulder with the other ruched high near the neck—highlighted the sculpted folds that defined the silhouette. Golden teardrop earrings from The Gitsu and diamond-studded rings from House of JSK Jewels added a metallic touch, while peachy lips, dewy skin and barely-there waves polished off her literally award-winning look.

Sculptural waves met coral textures in Radhika Madan’s gown that she donned for an award function. Styled by Nidhi Agarwal, the actress wore Vaishali Studio’s Coils of Silence gown from their Kintsugi Collection, first unveiled at Paris Haute Couture Week. The strapless piece curved close to the body in a form-fitting silhouette, its neckline sculpted into a dramatic wave-like extension that rose over the chest. Textured, layered fabric was rippled with bubblegum and sherbet pink stripes from shoulder to hem, semi-sheer in spots to reveal a nude underlayer. Fine, hand-corded filaments made the gown resemble an intricate coral. Madan paired it with jewellery by DiAi Designs and Firefly Diamonds, completing a look that was as nature-inspired as it was architectural.

Marking India Day Parade festivities in New York City, Rashmika Mandanna, styled by Meagan Concessio, arrived in a red and gold Anarkali from Ritu Kumar’s showcase at India Couture Week 2025, Threads of Time: Reimagined collection. The floor-length silhouette had a fitted sweetheart bodice with embroidered full sleeves and volume from kalidar. The entire garment was dotted with dense metallic floral and paisley motifs in red, green and earth tones. A red chiffon dupatta with a vintage-inspired jhalar border draped the entire outfit. Anchored with a gunmetal choker, traditional jhumkas, aviator shades and a centre-parted sleek bun, the look brought Indian craft to a New York street backdrop.

Designers embellish denim to make it fun again, and fashion loves it

If 2025 has proved anything, it is that denim is having a moment. Whether it’s Gap’s viral video with girl group Katseye, Sydney Sweeney’s infamous American Eagle ad, or Levi’s naming Alia Bhatt as their new face, it’s hard to ignore the blue jean and its many iterations. This time around, the trusty blue jean has a new avatar – and it is sparkly and spotlight-ready. Shimmery rhinestones, crystals, glitter, and fringes embellish denim today; a far cry from what it was meant to be. Initially created as sturdy, protective wear for the working class to haul gold, denim is now bedazzled and rhinestoned. It goes without saying that embellished jeans are the undeniable main character of your wardrobe.

Designers have been setting the stage for this sparkle-soaked denim era for a while now. The ’90s saw a wave of couture-level rhinestone denim, with Jean Paul Gaultier notably sending out heavily embellished versions through the seasons. Then came the Y2K boom, which gave us enough bedazzled jeans to fill a crystal vault, with some standout moments like Cher at the 52nd Primetime Emmy Awards in 2000 in sparkly grey jeans, Madonna in Tom Ford for Gucci’s multi-stoned purple jeans at the 1999 Grammy Awards, and Britney Spears performing in her signature bedazzled denims during her 2001 Dream Within A Dream Tour.

Most recently, Gucci’s Resort 2025 sent crystal-fringed jeans down the runway, while Pharrell, for Louis Vuitton Men’s Fall/Winter 2024, featured blue-studded denim in his cowboy-themed collection. And of course, Kaia Gerber’s trompe l’oeil jeans for Valentino Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023—half a million glass beads and pearls stitched into silk gazar—set a new bar for what ‘jeans’ could be and mean, blurring the line between denim and couture.

Off the runway, sparkly jeans have been lighting up everyday wardrobes, too. Taylor Swift has rocked embellish denim more than once—be it butterfly-cutout jeans lined with crystals or rhinestone shorts at Super Bowl games—making it clear that she doesn’t reserve sequins just for the stage. Anne Hathaway brought her own twist to the trend in ripped beige jeans at Ralph Lauren Fall 2025, proving shimmer works even without indigo. And when Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the IPL 2025, it wasn’t just the viral victory hugs with Virat Kohli—Anushka Sharma’s pearl-and-sequin-drenched denim stole fashion hearts. Meanwhile, Malaika Arora went full glam in bedazzled Calvin Klein jeans and a matching bralette.

However, denim has always been an enduring vehicle of self expression, and be it paint splatters, rips, or something snazzier, jeans make for the ideal canvas. For a while in between, jeans slipped into the background, becoming the dependable basic you’d throw on to tone things down rather than turn heads. They were the off-duty uniform–a casual basic for casual events. But with embellished denim strutting back into the spotlight, the script has flipped: no longer just sartorial filler, these glitzy jeans are now fair game for everything from brunches to big nights out. Try a rhinestoned pair with a slouchy tank and metallic heels for an off-duty-meets-after-hours moment, or clash their sparkle with an oversized graphic tee and sharp kitten mules. Slip them under a sheer dress for a playful Y2K callback, or pair them with a crisp white shirt for maximum impact. For maximal styling, go top to toe in sparkly denim: think crystal laden jacket, jeans, and even a boot to really lean into the trend.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas looks sharp in paisley-printed Ralph Lauren

Priyanka Chopra Jonas attended Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2026 runway show in New York City on Wednesday evening in the brand’s bronzed jacquard jacket and skirt set with a paisley print. Staged inside the company’s headquarters at 650 Madison Avenue and outside the official fashion week calendar, the show drew a select set of celebrity attendees, among whom Chopra Jonas stood out in the textured RL number.

The look, styled by duo Wayman and Micah was an interesting intersection of evening chic and boardroom edge. Featuring a structured blazer in bronzed metallic jacquard, the ensemble had a notched lapel neckline that plunged down to the midriff and dramatic shoulder pads. The jacket was cinched at the waist with a broad brown leather belt before it gave way to a floor-sweeping skirt. Fluid, flouncy, and subtly ruffled, complemented the clean lines of the jacket well. The fabric itself was a textured metallic weave that shifted between copper and gold tones, underscoring Ralph Lauren’s ability to reimagine tailoring through an eveningwear lens.

No heavy jewellery was in sight, and Chopra Jonas was seen wearing sculptural earrings and two statement rings from Bvlgari on both middle fingers. Her muted tortoiseshell French manicure and chocolate jelly cat-eye pedicure extended the earthy palette of the look.

Walking in an unwalkable city taught me more about self-care than a gym workout

If you live in Mumbai, you learn quickly that walking is rarely romantic. The footpaths are often uneven, traffic doesn’t stop and the heat presses down until even a two-minute stroll feels like a battle. The city moves fast and fiercely, but it rarely makes space for those on foot. It will teach you to run, but delete the concept of “walk” from your internal storage.

One evening after work, with no taxi or rickshaw in sight, I did the unthinkable: I walked. What should have been frustrating became strangely calming. The next day, the same thing happened. No ride, another walk, the same sense of release. What began as an accident soon turned into the simplest ritual I’ve ever kept.

I realised self-care, especially in a city like Mumbai, has to be active and improvised, not a scented-candle moment slotted between meetings. For me it became walking: unplanned, unscheduled, but non-negotiable.

At first, the idea felt exhausting; I’d hype myself up just to cross a few lanes. But by the time I reached home, the mood shift was real. Tired but clear-headed, I started to look forward to those commutes. Soon the walks weren’t just for getting home: I picked up groceries, met friends, ran errands. Small, everyday detours turned into micro rituals.

My school mathematics teacher once made us copy formulas for 21 days. By the end, they stuck — my first lesson in habit-building. The science behind the 21-day rule may be contested, but the principle is this: do something often enough and it takes root. That’s exactly what happened with walking.

These short walks broke the spiral of stress. I’d reach home calmer, not in a yoga-class way but in the raw way anger drains after it’s walked out of you.

Experts say the benefits go well beyond mood. Dr Prarthana Shah, an integrative health coach, notes that five short casual walks of 7–10 minutes can boost heart health, lower blood pressure and help control blood sugar. For those with time, a 50-minute walk offers even greater cardiovascular gains, but, as she says, “Exercise should be easy to fit into your daily life and adapt to your schedule.”

The impact is psychological too. “Movement can absolutely bring us into a meditative state,” says yoga instructor Amy Kim. “In yoga, we often move to help us eventually sit still. Presence, awareness and mindfulness all begin with movement.” Walking also reduces stress hormones while raising dopamine and serotonin, and the neurochemical shift that makes you feel lighter. Even the physical act of moving forward can create the illusion of progress on days you feel stuck.

Deepica Mutyala built a beauty brand from virality and now she wants more

The year is 2015. A lipstick-as-colour-corrector video pushed Deepica Mutyala’s face onto millions of screens. Back then, YouTube beauty tutorials were still rough around the edges, and the idea of a brown-skinned woman teaching the world to colour correct with a red lipstick was unheard of. Today, there are entire shelves, campaigns and hashtags shaped by that moment.

Mutyala was 25, working full-time in product development, not chasing internet fame. But her accidental virality–at a time when likes still felt like surprises–lung her into a new orbit. News stories followed. Her Instagram exploded and her beauty brand, Live Tinted, was born from a viral moment and built for all skin tones. So did rounds of funding, features on the founder and the usual headlines about breaking glass ceilings. She became a case study in representation. The ‘girlboss’ arc played out in real time.

What followed wasn’t just a wave of support, but also scrutiny. “There was this unspoken pressure to be everything at once. Relatable and aspirational.

Loud and palatable. Brown, but brand-safe,” she says. The early years weren’t just about building a business; they were about decoding how much of herself to make legible to the world.

Mutyala is 36 now. The decade since has brought scale, visibility, pressure and an internal shift she’s still in the thick of. She’s less interested in hustling toward the next milestone and more focused on slowing down enough to ask: What do I actually want now? That question shows up in her personal life too.

“No one knows who I’ve dated. I’ve never posted that,” she says, when talking about boundaries. The algorithm may have helped build the brand, but not every part of her life is open to the public.

The tension between visibility and privacy shows up in smaller ways too. “My audience loves content about my family, and I love sharing it. But when I go home, I just want to eat dosas on the couch and watch a Hindi movie without documenting it,” she says.

She isn’t stepping back or burning out. But the version of ambition that powered her 20s doesn’t feel quite right anymore. “I want the kid and the company. I used to believe you couldn’t have both. But that’s changed.”

275 Most Likely To questions that will get any party started

If there’s any game better fit for a gathering of close friends, it’s the game of “Most Likely To” questions (the this or that game is a close second). Imagine this: You’re all sitting around a table or on the ground in a circle, tossing out friend’s names for the most random honorifics. “Most likely to open a pizza restaurant,” “most likely to sob uncontrollably through a horror film,” “most likely to get lost in the woods.” It’s even better when no one agrees on one single person for the title.

But “most likely to” is a game with many sides. Playing it with close friends brings the advantage of, well, having embarrassing personal anecdotes to defend your picks. But playing it with strangers is a sure-fire way to get to know someone quickly. There’s something especially funny about assigning someone you’ve only met once to “most likely to run a bird sanctuary.”

For the best results, get a group that’s a mix of people who know each other well and a few newbies. It’s a great icebreaker. While you can buy a set of cards that lay out the various most likely to situations, we think it’s more fun to make up your own. Grab a bowl, give everyone a pen and paper, and tell them to come up with a specific number of scenarios. To make it a bit easier, we pulled together some really good “who’s most likely to” questions for your next round.

This British Indian artist’s illustrations bring Mughal miniature paintings into the present

In addition to the commingling of objects and memory, Ahmed’s work also accommodates a second, more contemplative visual language. One that is not bursting from the margins but is slower, sequential and narrative-led. In Nur & the Nightmare, an illustrated series of 12 miniature-inspired artworks, she topples the folkloric trope of women being abducted by malignant djinns to present a consensual love story between Nur, a princess, and Kabus, a female-presenting djinn. “In South Asian mythology, djinns are often viewed as shape-shifting beings, so their gender is in flux too. It made me want to toy with the idea of humans embodying djinns,” she explains. In the section titled Falling, Nur and Kabus are seen resting in the shade of a tree. The text reads: “Nur spoke of the deep rot in her kingdom, Kabus spoke of the limits of Djinn law. Their shadows met like old lovers, their darknesses reaching out to discover each other. Nur saw her reflection playing on the pearly wings of Kabus and found her comfort there.”
