During this edition of Design Mumbai (November 26-November 29), the Soho House Lounge will feature three distinct artistic practices: works by Vinita Mungi, the Journey of Objects collective and Sejal Parek. Mungi, a Mumbai-based ceramic artist, presents Breast Stories—a series of sculptural works rooted in feminist thought, ecology and the sensorial intimacy of clay. Drawing inspiration from the symbolism present in Bengali writer and activist Mahasweta Devi’s eponymous book, Breast Stories addresses sexual assault and violence, borrowing from the experiences of the artist herself as well as those close to her. In her work, Mungi uses seashells to emphasise the breast as more than a symbol of beauty, eroticism or motherhood but as a harsh indictment of an exploitative social system and a weapon of resistance.

Someone once told me that you can tell a person is in a good relationship because they rarely mention it. I mean, to be fair, people do say some shit to me. There’s a guy I get the train with in the morning who is constantly warning us the world will end tomorrow and yet, there he is, bright and early the next day, world intact enough to allow at least one more train ride where commuters politely try not to catch his eye.

I think there’s probably something in that though, in the idea that a healthy relationship attracts less introspection, and certainly less texting of the group chat—or indeed, emails to agony aunts. But increasingly, I have come to believe that questions around a relationship are as integral to it as sex or laughter. As long as people have been falling in love, they’ve been questioning that fall (how do you know it’s love, is this guy right for me, how many cattle must my father offer for their hand, etc), but some questions arise more often than others.

With a little help from Google Trends, we compiled five of the relationship questions being asked most frequently right now, both as a way of pinpointing the precise love anxieties of our day, but also, to see if we could, sort of, help?

What is a monogamous relationship?

Sorry, but this is the kind of question my kids ask to avoid going to sleep. How do you make BUTTER? What colour is SATURDAY? Can you count to INFINITY? A monogamous relationship is when people promise emotional and sexual exclusivity to each other. The history of the thing is interesting but vague—a general shift towards monogamy started about three and a half million years ago, but most human societies (around 85 per cent of them) have permitted polygamy too. And even taking in evolutionary advantages, researchers can’t quite quantify why we, as a species, have come to largely favour monogamy over the centuries. Still, many continue to choose it, despite increasing headlines saying it’s “doomed” or “unrealistic” or “dead”. What is a monogamous relationship? It’s less “natural” than you were brought up to believe, it requires compromise and, just like its alternatives, it involves jealousy, love, desire and trust. (You make butter by whipping cream, Saturday is yellow, no and good night.)

How long does the honeymoon phase last in a relationship?

God, I met a couple recently who were in their eighties who still seemed to be in the honeymoon phase, touching each other’s arms, giggling—they’d been together for over 50 years. So I guess there’s no correct answer to this one (18 months, four days, three hours?), that the length of a honeymoon phase (meaning the period of time in which you feel entirely infatuated with your new partner, almost delirious with lust and vaguely euphoric) varies entirely depending on the people, and the relationship. But one thing I would say, is that it’s easy to reach the end of this phase, and see the dull and sometimes sticky reality of a relationship beyond its initial fireworks, and not recognise it as love. To be so caught up in the romance and excitement that the next phase, of compromise, routine and diminishing drama, looks like the end, when in fact it could very easily be the beginning. Something to think about!

What is an open relationship?

I was listening to Lily Allen’s album recently, as, I believe, was every woman between the ages of 30 and 50, and thinking about biscuits. You may have read, as I did, that recent legislation means that certain chocolate bars have so little cocoa in they can no longer be labelled as such and must now be called “chocolate flavoured biscuits“. And, listening to Lily sing about an open marriage (or, as its most commonly called today, “ethical non-monogamy”, meaning a couple consent to their partner having sex with other people), but one where the husband broke all the rules they had carefully put in place, it occurred to me that, in the same way a Club bar can not be called chocolate, just by labelling something ethical does not make it so. And that, as an increasing number of people enter into open relationships without, perhaps, the trust or honesty or open communication required, it is perhaps necessary for us to call it ethical-flavoured non-monogamy?

What qualifies as cheating in a relationship?

Ok, I love this question. This is something I could chat about for hours, because, rather than the relatively cut and dried “bonking my best friend” sort of situation, cheating can exist on a vast, shimmering spectrum. And people often don’t know where they stand on it until the cheating occurs! Your partner says they had a sex dream about a celebrity? Is that cheating? Maybe for someone! Your partner ended a text to a coworker with kisses? Is that cheating? They got off with a stranger when horribly drunk? They slept with an ex when you were away? They have a whole other family living in Plymouth? The sex writer Dan Savage is very good on this topic. His advice is that couples should define sex as broadly as possible (so their sex life becomes richer and more interesting as more things than simple penetration count as sex), and that they should define cheating as narrowly as possible. The fewer things a couple counts as cheating “the less likely they are to cheat on each other and, consequently, the less likely they are to break up over an infidelity”. Define sex broadly, he summarises, you get “more and better sex. Define cheating narrowly: more resilient relationships.”

When you’re used to wellness looking like a post-office yoga class or an occasional Ayurvedic hot stone massage, the idea of a clinic timing your meals and watching how many times you chew can feel criminal. Yet that is exactly the philosophy Austrian medical health retreat VIVAMAYR brings to the table: gut-first and unapologetically regimented.

We unpacked their philosophy as Dhun Wellness hosted VIVAMAYR’s Dr Doris Schuscha to talk about why feeling great doesn’t always start with calm rituals. Sometimes you have to take the rigorous path. The obvious question is, in a culture already steeped in yoga, Ayurveda and seasonal fasting, what does a European gut clinic add?

Eastern systems have always started with the centre. Ayurveda talks about agni, the digestive fire and the idea that if your digestion is off, everything from skin to sleep eventually follows. Traditional Chinese Medicine maps meridians and qi, but still pays attention to what, when and how you eat.

Modern Mayr Medicine fits surprisingly well into that universe. “The intestines are the root of our health,” says Dr Schuscha. She loves the image of the body as a tree: the gut as the root system, every other organ and function an outgrowth. If the roots are inflamed, overloaded or neglected, no amount of facials and supplements can compensate for long.

In Mayr logic, detox is not a seven-day stunt; it’s something that happens every single day, supported by simple rules. Eat earlier when your metabolism is naturally stronger. Chew slowly so the gut isn’t forced to do all the work. Leave generous gaps between meals so the digestive system can rest instead of firefighting. Have at least one “light” day a week where both your plate and your calendar are less overloaded.

One of Dr Schuscha’s favourite metaphors comes from the creator of the system, Dr FX Mayr himself: the body as a house. “Once a year you do a big, proper house cleaning,” she explains, “and the rest of the year you keep it tidy.” Most of us, she points out, only ever book the deep clean: the annual “detox week” and then live in chaos until the next one.

The reason VIVAMAYR has a reputation for strictness is obvious: guests are asked to follow very clear structures. Meals are timed. Portions are small and textures are gentle. It will sound discomforting for anyone used to grazing all day.

But Dr Schuscha insists the point isn’t punishment. “All the practices we recommend are based on logic and common sense,” she says. Once people actually live them, something shifts. Bloating reduces, sleep deepens, energy stops crashing at 4pm. The “rules” stop feeling like external discipline and start feeling like intuition. You don’t chew more because a clinic told you to; you do it because you like having a happy, comfortable stomach at 7pm.

Hairstyles that add instant volume

Some hairstyles can add more oomph than others, especially if they give texture or height. “I find that encouraging movement and texture into the hair adds volume and stacks out the hair, which leads to making it look fuller and thicker,” says Reece Wentworth, stylist at Blue Tit Salon Clapton. “You can use wands, straighteners or whatever you feel most comfortable using to wrap the hair in different directions to create a tousled, textured look. You can also use a wide tooth comb to soften out the movement,” he says.

Two great examples of hairstyles for fine hair are a blow dry and an updo. We also love half-up hair, since it gives the illusion of volume up top, while maintaining the length.

How to blow dry fine hair

A blow-dry gives thin hair more structure than air-drying ever will. Water weighs roots down. Lifting them as they dry builds natural height.

• “Blow-dry on top of the brush, not underneath for lift at the root,” says Pro Blo founder Rebecca McCann.
• Flip your head upside down for quick, easy volume; the classic trick still works.
• Skip the brush if it’s flattening your roots. “Rough-dry with your fingers and only brush the mid-lengths and ends,” says Lee Stafford.
• Use hot heat but medium speed. “High speed can make hair limp and flyaway,” adds Ricky Walters of Salon 64.

The updo

1995 was a major year for things we’re still influenced by. Windows 95 was launched. The first PlayStation was released. And Tom Ford, then 34 and creative director of Gucci, sent models down the autumn/winter 1996 runway in endless, midnight-coloured velvet – all slicked hair, golden eyeshadow and cinched-in waists. At the time, Vogue dubbed the show the “fashion equivalent of a one-night stand at Studio 54” (complimentary). Sales for Gucci very quickly soared by 90 per cent.

And so, the latter end of the ’90s became defined by velvet trousers. See also: Jean Paul Gaultier’s autumn/winter 1995 “cyber” collection, or the draped velvet suiting on Giorgio Armani’s autumn/winter 1998 runway. Everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow (famously) and Sarah Jessica Parker were on board, and this strange fabric, made from a variety of fibres, gave red carpets and parties a winking, almost gothic-leaning feel. Even now, throw on a bit of velvet, and it screams ’90s.

Velvet trousers (and a lot of velvet bodycon, actually) found their way back into hearts, minds and wardrobes in the 2010s – around the same time that everyone got weirdly into chokers and creepers – before promptly disappearing again. But now, lo and behold, velvet trousers are inching their way back again. From the baggy velvet pants for Celine’s spring/summer 2026 collection, to a return to velvet suiting for both Giorgio Armani and Dior, plus all manner of high-waisted velvet trousers for Gucci’s Resort 2026 collection, it’s like it never left!

It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that velvet trousers – divisive, yes, but also a party season classic – appear to be cropping up everywhere from the catwalks to London’s many cocktail bars as of late. The ’90s have a sort of vice-like grip on us, ebbing and flowing every few years or so, but never truly leaving (as the world turns to dust and AI takes over our jobs, there will still be talk of a ’90s comeback). Add a sprinkle of 2010s, Tumblr-ish nostalgia (I know) and a return to OTT party dressing, plus a move towards second-hand purchases, and the resurgence of velvet trousers makes perfect sense.

When it comes to how to style this party favourite, I’d suggest looking to the greats. Think: less “works at Urban Outfitters in 2016 and wears winged eyeliner” and more Tom Ford for Gucci, so silk shirts and low-slung velvet pants, full velvet suiting and, yes, the “fashion equivalent of a one-night stand at Studio 54”.

The fully embroidered blouse included an exaggerated sweetheart neckline and tiny cap sleeves with pearl tassels along every hem that added subtle movement to the garment. The sheer pallu was adorned with pink 3D floral motifs and pastel threadwork, with sequins scattered throughout the drape. A scalloped border emphasised the sari’s whimsy.

The accessories stayed in the same romantic lane. Kapoor wore a pink gemstone and diamond set, paired with the Isa beaded heart clutch from Doux Amour India—a heart-shaped purse with hand-embroidered glass beads forming a delicate rose across its surface.

Her hair was braided with white baby’s breath that complemented the look. The makeup was kept minimal: long lashes and nude lips on a glowing base.
