I first met Jerry on a Zoom call at the peak of the pandemic, when I was interviewing Anuradha Roy about her novel The Earthspinner. The author was sat outside her cottage in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, the sun on her face. Midway through the call, Jerry leapt onto her lap, refusing to budge, demanding cuddles—and then more cuddles. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what to do,” Roy laughed, gently trying to calm him down. But Jerry was determined. He had made her lap his home, and he would not leave. Readers of the book may know that the writer almost manifested Jerry into her world through Chinna, the fictional dog she created. But that is another story.

Nearly five years later, when I speak with Roy again, she is inside the cottage. It is winter in Ranikhet: dusk settling over the cantonment town, gunshots from the Kumaon regiment echoing through the valley, the birds already gone home. Even before the pleasantries, I ask after Jerry, who once again makes an appearance in the 2015 Man Booker–longlisted author’s new book, Called by the Hills: A Home in the Himalayas, published by John Murray Journeys, a Hachette imprint. Can I see him? Is he off somewhere causing mischief? Might he surprise us the way he did years ago? Roy pauses when I say his name. Later in our conversation, she tells me that Jerry was recently mauled by a leopard during a walk in broad daylight. “The leopard was waiting in the bushes. There were people on the road, tourists and such. I heard him yelp, and when I turned back, he was gone. In such cases, you never see the body.”

For the inauguration of the Shiv Mandir at Gir in Gujarat, Nita Ambani picked up a striking Tarun Tahiliani ensemble that spotlighted intricate craftsmanship. Kashida, a style of embroidery also from Kashmir, usually draws from the natural world, giving even an ornate textile like Jamawar an organic touch.

Ambani never holds back with jewellery. For this look, two sizable strands of vintage Golconda diamonds from her personal collection adorned her neck. She paired them with stacked ruby-studded bangles on each hand and a single diamond ring.

Her hair was loosely braided and threaded with red and white flowers in a simple, festive finish, while her makeup featured defined eyes and a nude lip on a clean base. A traditional red bindi completed the look.

When in doubt, mascara is the simplest route to any easy eye makeup look. Never underestimate what a quick lash curl and a few strategic swipes can do. “Curling your lashes will make you look instantly more awake,” per DeBratto. “I like to curl my lashes to the gods, squeezing the curler from the base of the lashes to the tip to ensure that I get an even bend throughout the lash. Then I’ll opt for my favourite tubing mascara to hold it all together.” The effect is eye-defining, effortless and done in under 30 seconds.

Pattinson: I said I am Gen Z.
Lawrence: You’re not Gen Z. You’re a millennial.
Pattinson: I am.
Lawrence: No, you’re a millennial. How old are you?
Pattinson: (turns to the lie detector) Truthful?
Lawrence: I believe that you believe that you’re Gen Z.
Pattinson: I am Gen Z.
Lawrence: What year were you born?
Pattinson: It doesn’t matter.
Lawrence: Okay. I can’t do this.

Truthful? Pattinson is 39. It’s hilarious that he commits to the bit, and even funnier that he manages to rattle Lawrence, who is usually the menace in the room. A comment under the interview said, “I love how he’s both speaking and looking like the crazy dude you avoid eye contact with on the street.” And they’re right, because that’s exactly what also makes him so… appealing. He is genuinely unserious, instead of coming across as the self-obsessed, tortured, almost-40-year-old ‘method actor’ he could very well be, or a media-trained robot regurgitating the same lines in every interview. That’s precisely what Gen Z is into. We like our celebrities a little weird, because it makes them feel real. It’s the same reason why we love Reneé Rapp, Alex Consani and Katseye: their so-called ‘lack of media training’ makes them seem relatable and actually human.

And of course, Pattinson takes himself seriously as an actor; there’s no doubt about that. He cares about his craft and is evidently good at it, with big releases like The Odyssey, Dune: Part Three, The Batman Part II and The Drama all lined up for next year. That’s why it’s so funny when he doesn’t take himself seriously as a person, especially during press tours and interviews.

It’s funny because Gen Z does the same thing—we’re deeply committed to our work even if the internet has given us a bad name. Some of the most talented, dedicated, passionate people I know are Gen Z, but we’ve been gaslit into believing that our insistence on boundaries equals a lack of work ethic. Our light-heartedness and refusal to be miserable are treated as unprofessional, as if protecting your peace makes you part of an ‘unhirable generation.’

Barrel leg jeans AKA horseshoe jeans AKA banana jeans – whatever you want to call them – I’ll admit, I never thought these jeans would stick. With their awkward bowlegged silhouette, curving outward from the thigh before tapering inwards at the ankle, they initially felt like too much of a detour from the wide-leg and cigarette styles we know and trust.
