Monsoon changes the rules of hair oiling, here are the tweaks experts say to make

Hair oiling is one of those rituals that feels immune to seasonality. A grandmother’s Sunday routine, a student’s exam-night stress buster, the one constant between winter dryness and summer heat. But monsoon complicates matters. High humidity doesn’t just change the way hair looks and feels; it alters the scalp’s ecosystem altogether. That’s where the debate begins: does hair oiling help restore balance or does it push the scalp further off-kilter?

What humidity does to your scalp

“High humidity traps sweat and sebum, disrupting the scalp’s microbiome and encouraging overgrowth of Malassezia fungi and certain bacteria,” explains Dr Kalyani Deshmukh of Traya. “This leads to itching, inflammation and flaking. Think of your scalp in the monsoon as a tropical greenhouse—warm, damp and perfect for fungal overgrowth. Unless you keep it clean and balanced, nature will take its course in your head.”

She adds that scalp health cannot rely on topical care alone. A protein-rich diet, probiotics for gut balance and nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, biotin and vitamin E all help reinforce the hair shaft and improve keratin production. In other words, monsoon hair health depends as much on what you eat as what you apply

Why dandruff thrives in the rains

The season is notorious for triggering scalp conditions. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are more common as moisture accelerates fungal growth, while poor drying habits and irregular washing make matters worse. Dr Deshmukh recommends lightweight conditioners, careful drying after every wash and avoiding rainwater on the scalp as simple ways to reduce flare-ups

The weight of heavy oils

For some, oiling feels protective, like armour against frizz and breakage. But experts warn that heavy oils can trap sweat and microbes, clogging follicles and causing scalp acne. Dr Deshmukh compares them to cling film that suffocates the scalp rather than nourishing it.

Dr Prachi Bodkhe, dermatologist at Envi Aesthetics, takes the point further: “Heavy, sticky oils like castor oil, mineral oil or thick unprocessed coconut oil should be avoided, as they can trap sweat and dirt, making the scalp a breeding ground for yeasts, other fungal flare-ups and hair follicle infections. Avoid overly fragranced oils as they may irritate an already sensitive scalp.”

Ananya Panday in a safari-print co-ord set channels romance and whimsy

Ananya Panday attended the unveiling of Airbnb’s first original experience in India, in a Montsand look that combined a corset silhouette with pastoral whimsy. The coordinated top and skirt featured the brand’s Safari print, a muted tapestry of beige and sage green illustrating wildlife scenes in the narrative style of French toile de Jouy; an 18th-century technique known for its finely drawn, single-tone motifs set against a pale background.

The top, a corset-inspired bustier with slender straps, buttoned down the front and flared gently at the waist. It flowed into a high-waisted A-line skirt that skimmed mid-calf, finished with discreet pockets that added ease without breaking the rhythm of the print.

Ananya Panday punctuated the look with earrings that had an iridescent centre stone, fringed with delicate star-shaped diamonds and a sun-inspired gold ring. On her wrist, she donned the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Frosted Gold watch. Makeup stayed soft and luminous—radiant skin with peachy lips, cheeks and lids—while her hair was swept into a clean updo, with tendrils framing her face.

Co-ords remain a staple silhouette on runways and racks, thanks to their versatility and ease of transitioning between seasons. At Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2025 show, they came in both botanical-inspired and geometric prints, offering a modern take on resort dressing. In Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2025/26 couture collection, the focus shifted to structure, with sharply tailored tweed. Across both, the modular pull of separates proved as versatile in daywear as it is in couture.

11 foods for hair growth to add to your plates, according to experts

Now for the good news. If your hair loss is down to certain nutrient deficiencies, adopting a healthy diet for your hair can help. Here we have listed the best foods for hair growth, as selected by the experts.

Best foods for hair growth

Eggs

Eggs are a complete protein source for keratin, the protein that makes up the hair, Ferguson explains. “Plus, there’s biotin and choline in the yolk,” she adds, both of which support the healthy production of keratin and optimal hair follicle formation. Other biotin foods include organ meats, certain vegetables, like sweet potatoes and spinach, and seeds and legumes.

Oily fish

“Salmon, sardines and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids that help keep the scalp environment calm. They also contain a helpful dose of vitamin D and iodine,” says Ferguson.

Seeds

“Pumpkin seeds are my go-to for zinc, which your follicles need to keep hair in the growth phase,” Stephenson explains. A simple way to eat more seeds is to pop them in a blender or food processor until they become a grainy powder, which can be sprinkled on top of salads or stirred into yoghurt.

“Seeds, especially pumpkin seeds, flax and almonds, provide zinc, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for scalp circulation and reducing inflammation around hair follicles,” Dr Murthy adds.

Berries

Another vegan hair growth food, berries are stuffed full of antioxidants which can help protect hair follicles and boost collagen.

Iron-rich foods

“Red meat, liver (sparingly), shellfish, lentils and spinach paired with a source of vitamin C to help with absorption can help with healthy hair growth,” Alex Manos, functional medicine practitioner at The HVN, says. “Because of the role iron plays in hair follicle proliferation, low iron stores are often one of the areas we investigate when we see diffuse (evenly across the head) hair loss.”

While the evidence is mixed, Manos says that iron deficiency is a recognised and reversible factor with hair loss in certain people, but especially women. If in doubt, an iron or ferritin blood test will confirm iron deficiency or anaemia.

Stuck for iron-rich recipes? Think warming stews made with beef, lamb or chicken livers, or, for a vegetarian option, one that contains lentils, spinach and sweet potato.

Brazil nuts

In moderation, brazil nuts can be a hugely helpful source of selenium, a trace mineral that helps with immunity, cell damage, thyroid health and hair growth. However, you only need to consume a small amount–one to two Brazil nuts–to reap the benefits.

Leafy greens

In his clinic, Murthy blends functional medicine with Ayurvedic practices and likes to pair protein-rich foods with dark, leafy vegetables like Moringa and curry leaves for their iron and chlorophyll. “This helps support both haemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells, as well as prana – vital life force.” Stephenson also points out that leafy greens “feed your follicles with iron, folate and vitamin A, all of which are important for hair growth”.

Bone broth or collagen powder

As beneficial as it is trendy, bone broth can help support the connective tissue around the hair follicle, as well as that in your skin. “Bone broth or collagen powder can top up glycine and proline,” Ferguson explains, noting that these two amino acids are important for collagen production.

Legumes

Stephenson recommends incorporating legumes like lentils, beans, peas, and chickpeas into your diet, due to their protein, iron and lysine, all of which help to support and fortify hair.

Fermented foods

“A spoonful of fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kimchi, or live yoghurt help with gut health and nutrient absorption,” Ferguson explains. A high-quality probiotic can also help with diversifying the bacteria in your gut, helping a healthy microbiome to flourish.

Healthy fats

Murthy likes healthy fat sources like ghee, avocado and cold-pressed sesame oil to nourish the bodily systems Ayurveda links to hair health – bone tissue and marrow or nervous tissue. For similar reasons, Ferguson says she’s generous with her intake of extra virgin olive oil and nuts. “They’re supportive fats that carry fat-soluble nutrients,” she explains.

8 new ways to wear jeans and a white t-shirt this season

As far as wardrobe staples go, few pairings are as quietly dependable or deceptively versatile as a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt. Worn well, it’s the everyday equivalent of a perfectly tailored suit – considered yet uncomplicated. When styling indecision sets in and nothing else feels quite right, I often reach for my favourite wide-leg jeans and boxy Uniqlo T-shirt. And despite the formula’s unassuming reputation, I’ve come to learn that its simplicity is where its strengths lie.

Of course, eternal outfit inspiration comes from Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the face of the clean-lined minimalism that defined much of the ’90s. Today, we like to call it “quiet luxury”, yet there was nothing quiet about how Bessette-Kennedy put an outfit together. She understood the power of restraint and how a pair of perfectly cut jeans and a simple T-shirt could look intentional, too.

Modern-day savants include Katie Holmes, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, whose off-duty wardrobes all regularly feature iterations of the classic pairing. Whether worn baggy and tucked in with a sharp blazer, cropped under an oversized coat, or tightly fitted with slingback heels, the look endures, season after season.

And while the jeans and white T-shirt formula might be foundational, I’m a firm believer that it doesn’t have to feel formulaic. If anything, I see it as a blank canvas for fashion’s more expressive flourishes, be it a well-placed accessory, an unexpected silhouette or a great layer slung over the shoulders.

Really, what makes the combination so enduring is that most of us already have some version of it tucked away in our drawers – it doesn’t rely on trend cycles or spending a small fortune to work. A simple shift in silhouette, a different denim wash or a subtle tuck can make this universal uniform into something entirely your own.

Rosé’s dog Hank went from rescue pup to Instagram’s most followed dog

If you could tell your dog one thing, what would it be?

Hank? Oh my gosh. If I could tell him one thing, I tell him a lot of things and I just assume he understands. But let’s say he doesn’t understand. Then in that case, I would tell him that I wish I could spend every minute of my day with him.

What is the most human thing your dog does?

The most human thing my dog does is, let’s think: He knows how to ask for things, as if he knows how to ask for water. He scrapes his water bowl and he knows how to ask for toys because he scrapes the box with his hand and then he looks at us and he basically demands that we take out a toy.

And he knows how to take care of all four of us as a family. He’s the happiest when we’re all together. I’ve noticed that when I’m by myself, he seems a bit sad. If I have one more family member, he becomes happy, two more—even happier! And when all four of us are together, he’s the happiest dog ever. It’s so adorable.

What is the most dog thing your dog does?

When we come back home, he always makes us take off our socks. He grabs our socks and he pulls them off our feet. It’s his most prized possession, our socks, and I think it’s because it has our scents or something. He takes the socks and thinks all of our socks are his so he’ll hide them under his blankets. It’s very adorable.

Sabrina Carpenter’s dogs, Goodwin and Louie, are a man’s best friend

Sabrina Carpenter was not present when her dogs, 14-year-old Goodwin and 1-year-old Louie, transformed her family’s home into the set of their very own Dogue cover shoot. But even without the pop star on the premises to provide colour commentary, it gave her family a whole new perspective on just how exhausting it is to be famous.

“My parents were like, ‘Whoa, we understand this is actually hard work for you,’” Carpenter recounts with a laugh over the phone. “They were like, ‘This was a really long day for the dogs. I don’t know how you do it!’”

Not only did Carpenter’s parents witness a cover shoot, they were active participants—namely her mother, Elizabeth, who commissioned custom Dogue kerchiefs for the occasion. Lo and behold: Goodwin and Louie, doing their best Themla & Louise in a white toy Maybach (a nod to Carpenter’s “Manchild” music video). She also helped stylist Lindsey Hartman dress the dogs in starchy Elizabethan collars and tiaras, and, later, the platinum blonde Sabrina-esque wigs they wore to lounge on a twin bed, surrounded by a sea of American Girl dolls. Are they relics of Carpenter’s childhood? “Yeah, unfortunately,” she groans.

Carpenter grew up alongside Goodwin, who is a mixture of Maltese, Lhasa apso, Yorkshire terrier, and long-haired Chihuahua. “They call them Angel Doll pups,” she says. “I mean, they’re literally just mutts, but he is a really special mutt.”

Goodwin joined the family just as a 13-year-old Carpenter—an in-demand child actor, as fans of Girl Meets World know well—booked a Fox pilot about three estranged siblings called The Goodwin Games. The show only lasted for seven episodes, but Goodwin’s name stuck. “You know what?” Carpenter says. “Whatever. I still love the name, and it’ll be a part of my history forever.”

Louie, a one-year-old Cavapoo with a coat of golden brown curls and a white stripe down his belly, is new to the Carpenter crew. But he is already well-acquainted with his owner’s superstar lifestyle. Both dogs have joined her on her Short n’ Sweet tour—though they are kept confined. “They wait in my dressing room during the show, so they’ve actually never gotten to see me perform live,” she says, “which sucks for them because I think they’d like it.”

Bhumi Pednekar’s purple anarkali gleams with jewellery-like embroidery

Bhumi Pednekar stepped out in a deep amethyst anarkali by Mrunalini Rao. The curved V-neckline was covered in dense embroidery combining gota-patti and mirror accents, each motif bordered with metallic thread that traced its shape. The embroidery continued along the sleeves, where mirrors were set into geometric floral patterns, and onto the dupatta, where the detailing appeared in smaller placements. Against the jewel-toned fabric, this created a scattered shimmer effect, while scalloped borders finished the edges in a single embroidered line. The skirt fell into a generous flare that ended in a plain hemline, offering contrast to the ornate upper half.

The actor’s jewellery built on the gold touches of the embroidery. She wore temple-style gold jhumkas topped with kundan-set studs and a carved Lakshmi motif that gave way to bell-shaped domes finished with tiny dangling beads. Alongside these, a neat trail of tiny studs traced her ear from lobe to helix, modernising the classic silhouette of the jhumkas. The accessories continued to her footwear—metallic strappy heels visible beneath the hemline, with a thin front band and mid-height heel. Their reflective surface caught the light in step with the mirror embroidery above.

Pednekar’s hair was parted down the centre and styled into a half-up ponytail, secured at the crown with the rest left loose and flowing down her back. Her makeup included softly kohled eyes with a defined waterline, a touch of shimmer on the eyelids and highlighted cheekbones. A muted peach-pink lipstick added colour without competing with the outfit, balanced by a small round bindi placed neatly between the brows.

The health of our gut microbiota—the trillions of microorganisms that live in the intestinal tract—is directly linked to the health of our central nervous system through what scientists call the gut–brain axis. When this balance tips, and harmful bacteria outnumber the beneficial ones, it can lead to dysbiosis: a disruption that raises the risk of inflammation and nervous system dysregulation.

One consequence is what’s known as intestinal hyperpermeability, or “leaky gut”, where the intestinal lining weakens and allows toxins and food particles to enter the bloodstream. Stress, processed sugar, alcohol, poor diet and even certain medications can all contribute. The antidote, says LePera, lies in whole, nutrient-rich foods that support—rather than inflame—the gut, helping to restore both microbial balance and nervous system stability.

Foods to regulate nervous system balance

Whole foods“When you eat unprocessed or minimally processed whole foods, you limit the intake of many products that inflame your nervous system,” notes LePera. The logic is simple: swap packaged snacks and ultra-processed meals for ingredients as close to their natural state as possible. Whole grains, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables—foods that stabilise blood sugar, support digestion and give the nervous system a calmer baseline to work from.

Foods rich in vitamin B

“B vitamins, particularly B12, and folic acid, play an essential role in strengthening the nervous system and preventing mood disorders such as anxiety and depression,” says LePera. Yet most of us fall short, especially when it comes to B12. It’s only naturally available in animal products like meat, eggs and dairy. For vegetarians and vegans, fortified foods or supplements can be essential. A deficiency doesn’t just show up as fatigue; it can directly affect mood, focus and overall nervous system resilience.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)–the marine omega-3 fatty acids found in oily seafood–are vital for brain and nervous system health. “Although omega-3s can be found in plants such as flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds,” LePera explains, “marine omega-3s (EPA and DHA) are by far the most beneficial to the health and regulation of the nervous system.” Salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna, mussels and oysters are some of the richest sources. For those who don’t consume seafood, algae-based supplements can be a plant-friendly way to bridge the gap.

Foods rich in vitamin D

Vitamin D does more than protect your bones; it helps regulate your mood, nervous system and even your sleep-wake rhythm. “Vitamin D is essential for regulating the nervous system, boosting our mood and helping us regulate our circadian clock,” writes LePera. Yet deficiency is common, even in sunny countries like India, thanks to pollution, long hours indoors and our skin’s reduced ability to synthesise vitamin D in cities.

The fix doesn’t always need to be supplements. Start with what’s on your plate: oily fish such as mackerel, humble egg yolks, mushrooms and fortified staples like milk or ragi flour mixes. Think of it less as a nutrient checklist and more as nervous system support disguised as dinner.

Anti-oxidant-rich plants

“Fruits, vegetables, dried fruit and any other plant-based food rich in antioxidants provide us with energy and protect our nervous system,” says LePera. Colourful produce from berries and citrus to leafy greens and nuts is packed with polyphenols and flavonoids that combat oxidative stress. In practice, that means less inflammation and more protection for the neurons that govern mood and cognition.

Wearing jorts made me feel cool for the first time ever

Some scientists claim that when you die, there are seven minutes during which you experience a supercut of the defining moments of your life. For me, I know that somewhere between my high-school graduation and the birth of my first child will be the moment I put on my first pair of jorts.

The Adam Sandler–esque silhouette took me by surprise when it transitioned from the basketball court to the runway, but who was I to question it? If Sandler can claim red carpets in basketball shorts, surely I could handle brunch in denim ones.

There I was, standing in the ugliest pair of pants I had ever worn, and I felt… so cool. Had I finally figured it out? Was the secret to being cool not a leather jacket and mullet, but an oversized pair of pants? The more I started paying attention to bottomwear, I realised it wasn’t just jorts.

Perhaps anyone who looked cool did it not despite but because of the ‘ugly pants’ they chose to don. There was something powerful about it. In deliberately choosing these garments, they weren’t simply playing the fashion game; they had created their own. And I wanted in.
