What ‘pregnancy-safe’ really means
According to Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, founder of Isaac Luxe, India’s market for pregnancy-safe skincare is expanding quickly, but regulation hasn’t caught up. “Many of these labels act as marketing tools rather than verified medical standards,” she says. “Unlike food or pharmaceutical safety, there’s no single authority assessing these claims.”
“One ingredient may be safe in isolation,” says Dr Geeta Mehra Fazalbhoy, founder of Skin & You Clinic, “but skincare is about the whole list of ingredients working together in tandem. Unless the full product has been evaluated, the label alone doesn’t mean much.” Always read ingredient lists and discuss any actives, especially retinoids, hydroquinone, high-strength salicylic acid or strong peels with your doctor before use.
Common skin changes during pregnancy
Hormones overhaul the skin’s behaviour, sometimes mildly, sometimes dramatically. Expectant mothers often experience melasma, acne, dryness, itching or heightened sensitivity. “Even women who’ve never had breakouts may suddenly deal with oiliness or pigmentation,” says Dr Gupta. Gentleness is the way to go: fragrance-free cleansers, barrier-repair moisturisers and diligent sunscreen to prevent worsening pigmentation.
The ingredients dermatologists trust
Dr Gupta recommends niacinamide, azelaic acid, ceramides, vitamin C, squalane and peptides. Gentle, yet effective actives that support the skin barrier.
Dr Fazalbhoy adds that simplicity wins, “Ceramides to support the barrier, hyaluronic acid for hydration and oat extract for calming. For acne, azelaic acid and low-strength benzoyl peroxide can be used with care.”
The biggest pregnancy-safe skincare myths
Myth 1: Natural means safe.Not always. Some essential oils can irritate or cause allergic reactions.
Myth 2: Avoid all chemicals.
“Dermatologist-approved actives are safe when used correctly,” says Dr Gupta.
Myth 3: Expensive equals effective.
The goal isn’t luxury. Choose nourishment over fear.
Myth 4: Nothing is really pregnancy-safe.
“Most regulated products use actives in small, safe concentrations,” Dr Fazalbhoy explains. “Gentle consistency, hydration and sun protection go further than switching your entire routine.”
Pregnancy is the time to simplify your routine and strip it down to the basics. As Dr Fazalbhoy puts it, “Not every new mark or pigment patch needs correction. Many of these changes fade naturally postpartum. Gentle care often outperforms constant intervention.”
