The long boho skirt is making a grand return this winter

Once a hallmark of the free-wheeling ’70s, and later an early-’00s It-girl essential, the long, boho skirt is making a cheerful return this season. Which, to me, feels entirely natural – its looseness taps into fashion’s wider lean towards arcadian chic: head-to-toe paisley, diaphanous dresses, rope-tie sandals, beaten-in leathers and suede bags swaying with fringe.

Few have embraced this barefoot spirit quite like Chemena Kamali, whose work at Chloé is rooted in an easy, unstudied femininity. “It’s very much about an intuitive way of dressing,” Kamali told this magazine of her imagined muse in 2024. “I think there’s this longing for undone-ness and freedom and softness and movement.” She’s not alone. At Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello offered ruffled paisley-print skirts for spring/summer 2025; Elie Saab showed aqueous, waterfall-like skirts in sheer python print; and David Koma at Blumarine leaned fully into the ’00s with slashed, low-slung silk-and-lace maxis; while Chanel’s Matthieu Blazy sent out tiered skirts bursting with scarlet plumes.

And, of course, no article themed around the term “boho chic” is complete without reference to Sienna Miller, who arrived at the 2025 Fashion Awards in a floaty, semi-transparent Givenchy gown, serving as a reminder that she has been the ultimate proponent of this trend since the early ’00s. For example: who could forget that 2003 image of her wearing a wafty column skirt and sinuous camisole at FrostFrench’s lingerie launch? Ever faithful to Chloé’s bohemian universe, she continues to wear the house with near-devotional regularity – from front-row appearances at Paris Fashion Week to the 2024 Cannes red carpet – keeping alive the romantic, poetic femininity Kamali is intent on celebrating.
